In adolescence, peer groups can become the dominant influence, sometimes conflicting with parents and authority.
Teenagers often adopt the values of the group/gang in preference to adult values and judge themselves by whatever their friends approve of what they do. This is not altogether a bad thing!

Groups/gangs often develop a powerful "team spirit" and they learn to use each others strenghts in a positive way.
You can also open new doors to young people and give them new standards for self-judgement. By providing regular positive feedback you can show them strenghts they never knew they had and build upon their confidence.
You may not replace the influence of the peer group but you can balance it out a bit.

Coaching children is a heavy responsibility but it can be a very enjoyable one. It is important to remember some simple guidelines:-

By taking account of physical and mental changes, you can support them at every stage of rugby development, helping them to reach their personial peak of fitness and skill. By putting the children first and thinking positively, you can bring satisfaction and achievement into their lives.

By actively working with other adults you can create the right enviroment for continuing enjoyment.

By putting effort, progress and team spirit before winning you can encourage:

  • discipline
  • fair mindedness
  • sporting behavior.
